Chemung River Recreation
Boating and canoeing are popular on the Chemung RiverBoating, Canoeing, Fishing, and watching nature are just a few of the recreational activities offered by the Chemung River. Flowing 38-miles through 4 counties and two states, the Chemung River has become a great destination for recreational and serious canoeists alike. A Class I river, the Chemung offers both slow and fast sections with great scenery. Water depths vary during the year, but while not prohibited, motorboats are rare due to the shallowness of the river. A series of completed and developing river access sites is forming along the entire stretch of the Chemung River, including 11 launches in New York and 1 in Pennsylvania. These sites offer a variety of amenities, including parking and in many locations, concrete ramps without any fees for usage.

Watch for the osprey as you meander down the Chemung RiverIt is not uncommon to see Bald Eagles and Osprey on the Chemung, and many varieties of waterfowl call it home. Long a great fishing river, the Chemung offers many sporting fish opportunities, including bass and musky.

In the City, you can access the river from two completed boat launch sites – one at Dunn Field on the south side of the river, and one at Grove Street (off of Water Street) on the north side. These two locations are important, due to the fact that there is one on each side of the dam. You can travel around the dam by portaging on the south side of the river and dam.
