The Elmira City School District encompasses 206 square miles and services 7,500 students in 13 schools: eight elementary, two middle and three high schools. The district mission is "Every Student Succeeds," a goal that is achieved by a challenging curriculum, an emphasis on civility and character development, effective student assistance programs, career development through SCT BOCES and comprehensive special education services.

Dedicated teachers are committed to their students District students excel in academics; SAT scores in the district annually exceed state and national norms. A large number of graduates go on to college, technical programs or the military. Elmira alumni include Eileen Collins (the first female shuttle commander), Ernie Davis (the first African American Heisman Trophy winner) and world-famous designer Tommy Hilfiger.

The district continually strives for improvement. Schools that underachieve must form rigorous plans for improvement. After-school tutoring, summer school and practice tests help students improve their performance on state assessments.

The district's curriculum has been recognized statewide as a model for other schools. The large staff development program is also well-known for giving teachers an opportunity to improve their skills.

The Elmira district budget is more than $95.6 million. Approximately 64 percent of the budget comes in state aid, with 29 percent raised through property taxes. The district keeps tax increases to a minimum, with an average tax increase of less than 3 percent over the past 10 years.

Diven Elementary after the capital improvements that made it a modern educational facility In 2000, the district began an $88 million capital improvement project to modernize facilities, expand and improve accessibility. Completed buildings have large, modern libraries, bright classrooms and cafeterias. Safety has also been improved, with video cameras, door sensors and limited visitor entry at all schools.

Elmira offers a wealth of sports and extracurricular activities for students. Modified sports offer middle school students a chance to participate. District high school teams include swimming, wrestling and golf. Both high schools offer varsity and JV football, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, bowling, track and field and volleyball. The annual Erie Bell football game raises the cross-town rivalry between Elmira Free Academy and Southside High School.

The district also offers numerous opportunities for participation in music and drama. Elementary, middle and high school bands give students of all skill levels an opportunity to perform. The high school music program sends dozens of students to New York State School Music Association festivals each year and has earned national recognition for producing talented musicians. Students in the Elmira City School District have many opportunities to explore their worldEach high school drama department produces an annual musical in the spring.
